Cryptocurrency exploits in May 2025 totaled $244 million, marking a 39.29% decrease from April’s figures according to blockchain security firm PeckShield. Approximately 20 major incidents occurred, with coordinated recovery efforts reclaiming a substantial portion of stolen assets.

The most significant breach involved a $220 million attack targeting Cetus Protocol and the sui (SUI) network. Through swift action, validators and developers successfully froze $157 million of the stolen funds—achieving a 71% recovery rate. Attackers exploited a vulnerability in Cetus’s liquidity parameter checks, allowing manipulation of disproportionate positions.

While $63 million remains in the exploiter’s control, the rapid industry response highlights improving security coordination across decentralized networks. This single incident represented over 90% of May’s total hack-related losses.
